December 17th 2007 – Putin says that if his party’s candidate, Dmitry Medvedev, becomes president after the March elections, Putin will become the prime minister. In Russia the president has more power, but with Putin in the number two position that could change.

First Deputy PM Dmitry Medvedev Putin and his party United Russia have named Dmitry Medvedev as their pick to run for president in the elections next March. Given that Putin and United Russia just won over 60% of the vote in parliamentary elections, Medvedev will probably win.

Putin said: “I have known him for more than 17 years, I have worked with him very closely all these years, and I fully and completely support this candidacy”.

Medvedev is deputy prime minister, chairman of Gazprom and part of Putin’s inner circle. Putin has known him since his days in St Petersburg.

United Russia, President Putin’s party, won more 63% of the vote in parliamentary elections according to an exit poll. The Communists won 12%, the Liberal Democrats 8% and Fair Russia 8%.
