December 12th 2007 – General Francois al-Hajj was killed by a car bomb in a Christian part of Beirut not far from the palace.

Al-Hajj was in line to possibly become the next army chief. He led the attack on Fatah al-Islam earlier this year.

Lebanon has failed to choose a president or form a government. Parliament is badly divided between those who favour Syria and those who favour the West.

The army has been deployed heavily in Beirut

With President Laboud due to leave office at midnight, the parliament in Lebanon still has not chosen a new president. Schools were closed and soldiers are out in force on the streets. By law power should go to the prime minister, but the fear is that Laboud might hang to power and create a showdown that could lead to war.
