Cyclone Sidr has killed more than 600 people on the southern coast of Bangladesh. Over a half million people have fled their homes. Three towns along the coast were flooded out. Waves coming in from the sea were as high as five metres. The good news is that Sidr has weakened considerably and is no longer a direct threat to life and limb.

Cyclone Sidr is smacking Bangladesh with winds of 230 km an hour. The nearby Indian states of Orissa and West Bengal are on red alert. After tearing off tin roofs, washing away thatched houses and uprooting trees along the coast it is headed for Dacca, the capital. At least 28 fishermen are believed dead so far. More.

A cyclone, by the way, is the same thing as a hurricane or typhoon. Three words for the same thing.
